Common on-line abbreviations

Generally there is no significance to the use of uppercase letters. We have used uppercase letters here when the abbreviation is an acronym. People make up abbreviations on the fly (nobody seems to like typing!)

Note that emoticons, also known as smileys, are used extensively when chatting online to indicate that a remark is meant in good humour.

The two most common being:

  • :) A happy face (imagine it rotated 90 degrees clockwise).
  • :( A sad face.
