Curious about how to bid in these types of auctions as a whole. I will provide an example:

The question is how do opener/responder communicate their shapes appropriately when the opponents interfere after the opening and response.

With this hand, I would double, expecting to

Convert 3!D to 4!S
Raise 3!H to 4!H
Raise 3!S to 4!S
Convert 3N to 4!S

I would tend to agree with this, but what you should be asking is what does your partner's pass mean? Generally, it means a minimal sort of hand that has no interest in game. There are 3 levels of opening hands, the 12-15 pt hands (minimal), 16-18, and 19-21 (strong). With the first kind of hand, your partner will take no action, so you have to ask yourself if partner has a normal 14-15 pt hand can you make game? You have a quality 6/4 hand that has a lot of playing potential. Keep in mind, that even if you follow the advice listed above there is no guarantee that you will make it, but the potential is worth it. The preempt has removed all the space you have to make an informed, intelligent inquery, so you are stuck with the idea of "bidding what you think you can make".

BTW, the double should not mean "I can beat this", but "I have too much to pass, do something intelligent".
