Most people will bid this 1N-4N if they get beyond 3N at all.

I suspect we don't either through the accident of opening 1 rather than 1 with 4-4 minors (playing a weak NT).

I would be reluctant to bid 4NT with this hand assuming 1NT = 15-17.
If the agreement is that 1NT may contain a 5-card major then it might go something like:
- 1NT
2 2
3 4
4 4
4NT 5
6 P

Ok, 3 aces and a 5-cd suit, I could bid 4NT in IMPs facing a 15-17. But E is nowhere near an accept.

Yep, the West hand is just a 15 count and on power alone probably not enough for a NT slam. But, then again, the 15 count is all prime cards (As, Ks) and you know the point count is somewhere between 30 and 32 points. So a decision needs to be made whether to make a minor slam try or not.

I'd be inclined to make a try because responder's hand just about insures there are unlikely to be two quick losers in any suit. So rather than just bidding NT, I think you ought to use whatever tools you have to show and settle for NT if no fit is found. The risk is that if you then settle in NT that reveal enough in the try to guide the defense or that you may get too high in NT. But nothing ventured, nothing gained.

For me, the auction would probably be as follows:

1 NT - 2
2 - 3 *
3 - 4
4 - 4
4 NT - 5
6

* = clubs or minor suit stayman. 3 by opener confirms 4+ and shows stopper else without 4+ opener must bid 3 .

I am flexible about which minor to open. But even if I opened 1C, I suspect we are stopping in 3NT - especially at MPs. Our auction might be 1C, 2C*; 2D,3NT.

if the west hand had a 5cM obviously you would show it and make a slam try. this idea that you don't do the same with a 5 card minor is just due to poor methods and perhaps a matchpoint hangover.

Absolutely no guarantee partner accepts, since he appears to have a bare minimum 15 with only one ace and a possibly wasted J
