When I'm reviewing hands from a tournament I would expect to be able to share the handviewer link with a friend from within the smartphone app. However, I can't for the life of me see how to do that. If it's not possible then it surely should be!

Sorry, the mobile app is missing lots of those little features. You have to switch to the web app.
