Given that I like to play quite light 1M overcalls, I am finding that partner bidding 1nt naturally in this position is not a very good idea since we are often outgunned. I'd rather play rdbl as showing 2 cd support and decent values to defend against super-light openers and doublers, than stick neck out with 1nt, 1s-xx perhaps more likely to make and opps not as keen to sit for it. I'd rather defend opp's 1nt with lead tempo.

So that means I never bid 1nt (at least for the nat 8-10/8-11/9-11 sense), and should use it for some other purpose. Any good ideas?

Transfers starting with 1N. 2M-1 is a good raise.
