pass - my plan is to see how the auction progresses. preempting in hearts seems like a wild gamble first in, 3rd in i could understand, but we could end up playing some number of hearts going down when we're cold for 7 clubs

My guess will be to open 2H and hope I can bid 5C next.

Rule of 19 says open at one level, he says jokingly. Whether that is eminently sensible is another matter. PASS and hope to throw in a Michael's-style bid at the earliest opportunity. Whether you will get another opportunity, well it all depends on the auction.

I was sitting east and my partner on this occasion was less experienced. She knew that my 2NT was showing the other two suits, but lost confidence when I tried again!

The good news was that our team-mates managed 11 tricks in 4♠ doubled!

If you are willing to go to the 5 level unilaterally why not do so immediately over 1♠? That makes life much more uncomfortable for the opps. In any case -350 is not the end of the world when the opps have 24hcp and a double-fit.

I know it's sicko but I like a 4♥ opening. Make the opponents make the last guess.

Do you know this because you know your opponents or is this just what you expect seeing only 7 HCP and wild distribution in your own hand?

Okay, so it's from the OP's partner's inexperience and lack of boldness. But, looking at this again, just from the OP's own hand with a spade void and a 7-count, opps on average have a spade fit, 22 HCP, and plenty of distribution to make 4♠.

How would people here interpret (and choose among) 4♠ (both Michaels and top-and-bottom), 4NT, and 5♣ after the p-(1d)-p-(1s)?

4♠ and 5♣ are natural in my book - does anyone really play it as showing hearts and a minor here? 4NT as the rounded suits with extreme distribution is an option.
