So are about two-thirds of my human partners. I've not had much success reprogramming them either.

Nice response by northGIB. You can take 10 tricks opposite a good weak NT and a bit of luck. Of course you won't get there but at least you'll be in 2M rather than 1m.

it could be stopped. why would anyone want to stop it making the right bid?

Nobody has said why 1 is right.
Remember the most likely handfor south is 12-14 hcp balanced.
Passing 1 opposite this hand will be bad.

There is another point that I don't think anyone has yet made. For sure you would rather respond than pass if opener is a minimum balanced hand.
