I managed to get to 6S, which went off on the A of clubs followed by a club ruff.

6NT by North was cold.

Do I really want to be in a slam on a finesse ? although it is a finesse that is better than 50:50, but the odds a pointy suit is 5-0 is also up.

IF (notice the big if in many partnerships) that 5 bid asks for club control north should bid 5nt to show Kx(xx) and south can choose 6nt over that

6 would show 1st round control and 6 would show 2nd round control that is a stiff instead of a Kx(xx) that needs protecting.

Depending on the response, south picks the slam which could be in diamonds (if that suit were solid), spades or notrump or even try for the grand opposite a 6 response.

I would not be in 6, admittedly. Even with the best (IMO) auction from nullve above patner could easily hold AKxxxx, Qxx, Jx, Kx and there would be no real play for 6.

I do not think any one will bid a slam on these hands and more so after the 4C bid. There are too many ifs and buts involved. How do you know iff opener has DJ and responder has S10 ? Perhaps, some statistics expert can tell us,what are the chances of finding these 2 cards in the partnership,Also what are the chances of success keeping in mind the clubs will be 8/1 or 9/0 perhaps. It is very very easy to bid the slam in NT after seeing all the 52 cards. We call such 52-card experts as Expert Opticians. The statistical experts can also tell us the chances of finding spade finesse right as also the diamonds breaking 5/0 are.!

I think I would end up defending 4CX probably going -3.

Counters of HCP really would avoid a slam on these NS hands, but IMO one should always listen to the bidding, which makes slam in this case very much worth while. North should be declarer in any slam, and that's why transfer responses should be deployed after (such) strong preemptive bidding. 'Raising partner's suit' is not very helpful anymore, when the bidding is already that high.

The preempt might make west better odds to have Q but still a valid point.
And are you going to figure all this out after a 4 preempt.

The problem is that north is the one that has to get excited, and his hand doesn't look slammish at all. To say that south should drive to slam is just wrong.

Well, our auction continued like this:

1S (4C) 4D
5D 5H
6S.

Not the best I suppose.

If the finesse works, then you seem to be able to withstand a 5-0 break in one of the pointy suits.

I don't want to assign blame since nobody did anything clearly wrong. But with the good 6-card suit, Kx in clubs and lack of controls I prefer 4S over 5D. So many hands where 5D has 3 top losers.
The easiest way to count losers is to line up the people who talk about loser count, and count them. -Kieran Dyke
