I am wondering if anybody can propose a scheme of responses for when I open 1D, LHO does a take-out double, and now it's my Partner's turn to bid in 3rd or 4th seat ?

In the system that that we play, the 1D bid has intermediate values and shows a) a single-suited Club hand OR b) a single suited Diamond hand OR c)
4+ Diamonds and 5+ cards in one of the Majors....The 1D opening denies precisely 4 cards in a Major.

(our 1C opening is a Precision Club and our 1NT opening is 12-15 in all seats)

We play Match point scoring, so there is a desire to play our partial in the Major, if we have one

XX shows hearts. 1H* shows spades. 1S* "is a transfer to NT." 1NT* shows clubs. 2C* shows Ds.


This tends to end play the stronger defender fairly often on the opening lead.

I'm not familiar with that type of 1♦ opening, but I think

1♥ = 5+ hearts
1♠ = 5+ spades

would be the strong majority choice to get partner's long major suit into view.

Thanks, we currently use a transfer scheme, but for some reason, I don't think this is optimal because Responder is ignoring the high probability that Opener has a 5+ card Major or (a lesser probability) 6+ card Minor......

I have this gut feeling that Responder's bids over a take -out double over 1D being 'IDENTICAL' whether one is playing 2/1 or Precision or canapé or ACOL probably isn't 100% optimal...It is just a feeling though......

From your description of the options included in the 1♦ open, I would be thinking along the lines of not showing a 5 card major, but showing 3+ major(s) or diamonds. If hands (a) and (b) are going to be bidding that suit at the next bid, © is your only concern.

How about a sort of transfer walsh style :
pass = denies any of the others
XX = 3+ hearts only, may have diamonds
1♥ = 3+ spades only, may have diamonds
1♠ = 4+ diamonds and no majors,
1NT = both 3+ majors,
...all the above being not strong enough to invite game opposite the intermediate opener, and
2♣ = any hand strong enough to invite game, and sort out the denomination later.

This should let opener make a sensible rebid. As responder's bids showing a single major may or may not have diamond support, should it be the wrong major, you want opener of type © to bid 1NT or double RHO to show that, then let responder act sensibly.
