I think redoubling to show strength is fine. Some players prefer that redouble denies a fit. I don't think it is a question of right or wrong, just a matter style. I would not xx with 4 card support, although maybe this is splitting hairs a bit.

No but it's subject to partnership discussion after the fact.

If it's a flat hand, redouble followed by a spade bid does show this in my partnership.

If it's shapely, we bid an artificial 2nt to show the point range and support at once.

It's not wrong, but if you're playing with me, it will be a very specific 12 high with 3 spades.

There are those who believe that XX is what is used for all 10+ (maybe with 2NT LR+ with 4-card support and strong offence) and any other call denies 10+. I don't like that because it doesn't really tell partner what they need to know - which is whether to defend or not.

My opinion (and it's a fairly common one) is that the redouble shows strong interest in defending. My agreement is that I would double two suits for penalty, or I would pass any of the three if partner penalty doubled. Apart from this and 2NT LR+, we "ignore" the double (2/1 is off, as it is over an overcall); so 3-card limit raise would tend to bid a suit, then jump in opener's. That tends to imply that there is no fit when I redouble; fits breed fits, and defending at low levels against a fit auction is rarely right, especially doubled; so the hands I want to defend on aren't fit hands.

As everyone is saying, it's a matter of partnership agreement, and those that play one way playing pickup with those that play the other tend to have a disaster before they discuss it!

the way to show support is to bid 2nt.

if you have the agreement that 2nt shows four card support you have to redouble. This doesn't show support but doesn't deny it either.

if you can bid 2nt with only 3 card support, redouble denies support

You don't *have* to. If my hand's got no side suits worth mentioning I might redouble, but for me it's the last option when everything else (inc 1N) is worse.
