Last week, a hand like this turned up in a Scottish Cup match.

It might have come straight out of a squeeze textbook :)

Against South's 6 contract, West leads 10.
(0 or 2 higher honours)

Plan the play.

For my own amusement, when I have the time, I simplify and standardise layouts by doing things like
  • Removing distracting pips (I could use x's instead).
  • Weakening the North and North-South hands..
  • Making trumps or the squeeze suit.
  • Making the threat against RHO, if possible.
  • Making the threat against LHO, if possible.
  • Keeping as the communication suit. if possible.
This helps to avoid deals that are almost identical except for cosmetic variations, It also makes it easier for double-dummy analysis :)

This is like B. Romanet makes explaining double squeeze initially : squeeze card 7, LHO menace 9, RHO menace 8, double m. 3 with A as winner and 2 for communicant card using always the same cards to present endings (unilaterals controlls with red Jacks - orientation referred to squeeze card).

JohnU has the right idea.

Duck the lead. Win the return. Cash 5 rounds of s, discarding a .
RHO must keep a guard, so he can guard only one minor (say )
Cash the top cards in the minor that you guess East abandoned (say ).
Now, reduce to a 3 card ending as above.
Finally, the last trump executes a double squeeze without more guesses.

This preliminary squeeze determines the variation.
Textbooks tell us that this mutate theme is common in compound-squeezes.

It is always better, when is possible and you visualized, polite ending chashing winners. These ones have two situations (in this case): double (=comunicant) menace in diamond and unilateral in club or double m. in club and unilateral in diamond plus Jack of heart for a balanced double squeeze with 3 cards.
