When Gib has no call available that fits the system it looks for a best fitting alternative. Then a lie is inevitable and it is just a question of which lie is likely to be the least damaging. It may have concluded (not saying that I agree) that the Spades are too poor to venture 2N and the diamonds not long enough to raise.

Being one point outside definition is not uncommon when this happens. 2 points adrift may be rare.

I do not come across this problem so much because I would have opened 1N. With a human partner also.
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

"Gentlemen, when the barrage lifts." 9th battalion, King's own Yorkshire light infantry,
2000 years earlier: "morituri te salutant"

"I will be with you, whatever". Blair to Bush, precursor to invasion of Iraq

Isn't it actually 3 points off here?
Gib will also count a total-point for the doubleton, doesnt it?

Not doubleton honour, no.

I think you are right about 2D, although most would agree that 2NT is the better action. I never liked the somewhat dated approach that 4SF was only a one-round force, but it would have been perfect here.
