IMP pairs.

3S is preemptive, with 0 to a mediocre 7 HCP.

[ETA] We also play mini-splinters, so P cannot have shortage and 5+ points.

"definitely that's what I like to play when I'm playing standard - I want to be able to bid diamonds because bidding good suits is important in bridge" - Meckstroth's opinion on weak 2 diamond

You can't investigate, game can be ridiculously cold, just bid it at IMPs

We would need a perfect flop and some luck to make slam so I'll settle on game.

you bid game anyway, but if partner has less than 5ish on this auction he's an idiot.

If I was feeling Karapet the Free Armenian unlucky, I would pass.

Ta. Just a sanity check. Everyone in the room (inc me) reached 4, which was a poor contract that required (and in fact had) trumps 2-2 with K onside.

Sorry, this is far too wide a range. It's obvious to bid game on the quoted hand, but make the hand a bit weaker and you are just guessing.

Would you feel differently NV? Or the same at any vulnerability? And what range would you recommend instead (given that the upper limit will be a bad 7)?

I've so far found it goes pretty well if you just assume responder is near max, since his a priori odds of having less than, say, 5 are so low - and lower still given that opener is looking at (say approx) an 18-point hand and a nine-card fit, and neither opp has been able to act.

not particularly relevant, but if my system was to raise on 4 pieces with 0-7 hcp, at this vulnerability, i would only make the bid when i held 5-7

Then your partner would be giving misinformation if they said 0-7 when it is really 5-7.
