2016 Spingold Street v. Nickell, board 29

NS Meckwell, EW Bessis/Volcker

South (Meckstroth) led the A and North (Rodwell) followed with the jack.

Any thoughts as to what this card indicates? On Vugraph Al Hollander suggested (with some doubt) that it was attitude.

Usually playing an honor shows the top of a sequence, so it denies holding the Queen.

But East was unlikely to bid 3NT without the Q, so he doesn't really need this information. I suspect it was suit preference for Spades.

I initially thought the same, but don't Meckwell play *upside-down* suit preference?

I think it might have been an alarm clock signal, please do something unusual. I don't think a spade switch is that unusual though. Usually when you want to know what a card shows, you look at the next trick to see how it might have been taken.

Anyone know if A or K asks for unblock for Meckwell. could simply be unblocking.

They play the king lead as their unblock/count lead against NT.

He is simply unblocking to lead through Qxx(x) if he gets in.
