Agreed, there is too much danger that a good 6/7 is going off. I want to preempt to get them to play in their heart fit rather than their better minor fit, but not so hard they actually double me.

Agree with 4.

Sorry to hijack, but if it was instead...

What now?

Eagles123's hand.
2s weak imps
I rank
1. 4 = PRE. Some defence against slams.
2. 3 = PRE.
3. Pass
4. 5 = PRE.

Shyam's hijack

I rank
1. 4 = PRE.
2. 5 = PRE gives opponents room to settle in 5. You might push opponents into a slam but you do have some defence.
3. 3 = PRE.
4. Pass

Another variant.

I rank
1. 4 = PRE. Defence prospects are bleak.
2. Pass
3. 3 = PRE.
4. 5 = PRE. You have sparse defence, so IMO this is dangerous,

At these colors I would not consider anything but 4S. Might be -300, might be -1100 but expect -500/-800 most of the time. 3S still gives them a cuebid.

However, I expect some slams will make and if they get a free ride they more likely will get there.

The reason for including my variant was to check if anyone would raise all the way to 5 as a blocking move. e.g. Nigel ranked it as his second choice

At these colors, it could be right to bid 5 over 5, 5 or 5. In which case shouldn't we consider (at least briefly) doing it up front?

Bidding 5 to block just looks wrong with 4 trump (a spade might cash / 5M will not be cheap), 4 cards in the other major (handling issues?) and no void (we want some hope of making a Lightner x if they bid 6).

If you give partner KQJxxx xx xx xxx , you are down 800 in five spades and they have a grand. You don't want to push them to six. You rather settle for minus 640 or whatever.

4 is enough pressure here without painting them into the doubling corner but if it was hearts I would steal blackwood with 5 of them.
