It's close but I would pass. 4h doesn't rate to be too clever if p is say 4315 and with our hand we could be absolutely creaming 4d

Indeed, but it would also help to know who is vulnerable.

Pass. To me it isn't that close, even at these colors: we will set them and we may not have a game. At equal vul, it would be a no-brainer: if we can make game when I am this flat, they will be down for more than the game.

I agree with you it's close, it wouldn't totally surprise me if the layout was something like:
where 4♦ and 4♥ both make, but I think I'd pass

Even then, 4 hearts is not so secure. Increase the value of North's heart pips and I think the heart contract will fail on a forcing defence?

On the other hand, have the majors split more nicely and give West the ♣Q and now 6 of either major looks pretty good. Which only goes to show that picking out individual hands is a mugs' game.

yes, of course. They pre-empt to make life difficult for us.

yes but it's better than 4♦X=
and what are they forcing you in, the diamond hand doesn't lead again after putting K♦ on the table

I passed, and thought at the time it had led to a bad result, though it turns out it was almost flat (0.1 to us).
4♦ was one off, 4♥ takes some work from declarer on a black suit lead, but I think you should probably make it either on an endplay or just setting up the clubs for a spade pitch.

You find 5 cards ♥ and a decent 14 hcp, yet you are talking about endplays, squeezes. This alone explains why pass was correct action. Try both 4♦ doubled and 4♥ in the deal below.

The hand that they opened 4D with shows that your pass is definitely right IMO. The more aggro the w/r 4D bidder is likely to be the better passing is. I totally agree with opening 4D with that hand FWIW, and I hate when my opps pass the X with hands like this
