3 in a flash.

What's outstanding feature of your hand? . It would be nice to find a fit if one exists, but tell you partner the main feature of your hand. If the are bad, say Axxxx KQxx Kxx x, then you might consider doubling rather than bidding .

Like one late great player I knew always said, "Bid what you've got!!"

I'm suspecting partner had x, AKxxx Qxxx, xxx... and 3 went off on a foul split with 4 cold. 3 seems fairly obvious. Also depends if I know my opponents, against me partner could easily have a stiff spade and 4 trump tricks so X becomes more attractive.

I rank
  • 3 = NAT. Almost a 6-card suit.
  • Double = T/O. More landing places.
  • Pass = NAT. More tempting before I read BBO expert advice.

Personally I find this interesting and close. I would X but not sure it's right
"definitely that's what I like to play when I'm playing standard - I want to be able to bid diamonds because bidding good suits is important in bridge" - Meckstroth's opinion on weak 2 diamond

I think I would X

As well as not burying the Heart suit it also protects the position where partner has a penalty X of Clubs (or penalty pass of t/o X of Clubs, which is effectively the same thing but with a weaker lower strength limit). It is not inconceivable that Diamonds may be the right spot.
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

"Gentlemen, when the barrage lifts." 9th battalion, King's own Yorkshire light infantry,
2000 years earlier: "morituri te salutant"

"I will be with you, whatever". Blair to Bush, precursor to invasion of Iraq

I prefer double to 3 by a large margin.

That there is such a wide divergence of views tells me it's close.
