Absolutely clear 2 bid, unless you're playing multi or have special agreements.

By the way, I hope that you're not counting the singleton when evaluating the HCPs. I ask because I can't understand how anyone could consider this hand to be "too strong" for 2.

Not in second seat, but if your minimum for a weak 2 is Jxxxx and out then it might be too good.

I prefer a style where this is a 1H opener.

In my opinion, there is no hand that is too strong for a weak two in a suit that is not good enough for a one bid in the same suit. However, there are reasons for not opening a weak two bid.

Some might not open 2 on the East hand because of the Qxx of spades. That would not bother me.

I am in second seat at equal nonvul. In second seat, there is less of a reason for opening a marginal weak two bid. So partner should expect a more sound hand for a 2 bid. I open 2.

+1 for ArtK78's comments.

2nd seat VUL (read the OP) this is a classic 2H bid.

I once had almost this hand and partner raised to 6H on Kx of hearts, knowing that I would have my bid. (David Collier if he still reads this). We won imps.

Standard opening 2, or what else?
Add length point instead of short-suit point is a common approach.

Sorry to hijack this very interesting thread, but suppose you are playing 15-17 1NT, and you pick up

KQx

Would anybody open 1NT with this hand in 1st seat and if not, why not?

In second hand I will certainly open with a weak bid. I use 2 for this purpose (Multi - 6 of 6 ), therefore 'other' in stead of 2

Although the hand is skeletal,I would certainly open 1NT For one thing I've declared my
pointage and shape in one bid.

The OP hand is an easy 2H open for me. If the C2 was a S2 instead (so 4=6=1=2), I would pass. We try to avoid 1st or 2nd seat preempts with a side 4 card major.

And even with a 4 card major aside you will often find you lost first stroke capacity and see opponents bidding happily to their contract eg 1 nt - 3 nt and partner finding wrong lead.

Any time you can describe your hand in 1 bid you should do so. I would open 2H.
