In my experience, traveling to regimes with "strong" governments is actually quite safe.
If you make sure not to do anything stupid, you'll be fine.
Just make sure (hope?) that you're not in a position where the government wants to make an example of you.

Our itinerary contains nothing remotely controversial.
We want to see some museums and archaeology sites (all of which are on the main tourist drag)
I want to take a cooking class. Abby wants to meet some local artists.

And there's no way in hell that we're going to talk politics.

Sounds like a great plan. Whether you are in Iran or on a ski slope, not doing anything stupid is the key. You can be unlucky anywhere, but good sense improves luck by a lot.
