WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) stunned everyone Thursday by dropping out of the race for speaker. Now, the question is: Who's next in line to run the House and assume the third-most powerful position in the country?

Nobody knows.

I've seen conspiracy theories claiming that Boehner knew that this would happen and only resigned in order to solidify his power.

I've wondered if this was orchestrated to spotlight the incompetence of the crazies in order to facilitate a party split.

at this point 2 more are standing for election, both are considered long shots, very long shots.

2 members considered favorites, do not want the job, truly do not want the job, but are being pressured to say yes. The job is a dead end job....an end of your career job where everyone will hate you ...job... Yes you have power....much power....but this is it and many will despise you.

Dems and Liberal posters are loving all of this. :)

I think it is imperative the U.S. elect a non-Republican President and continue to do so for as many years as it takes to restore a non-coservative bias to the S.C. in order to avoid blatant racist/anti-democracy acts such as this one the state of Alabama is doing.

150 years post Civil War the South is still engaged in hostilities.

I is my strong hope that the GOP can gt its act together. I know little of McCarthy but from what I hear he would have been a weak leader. His withdrawal lends credence to that view. I cannot recall a time when I have had so little regard for the leadership of either party. I think the Democratic party is floundering and I think the GOP has simply lost its mind. We have to find a way to do better.

I heard Hannity interviewing Gingrich on this yesterday. He asked Gingrich "what would you do if you were speaker?" and G kept dodging the question. IMO, he should have just pointed out that in order to be Speaker of the House, he'd have to be a member of the House, and currently he isn't. Seems to me he has no desire to run, either. I don't blame him.

Actually, there is no constitutional requirement for the Speaker to be a member, but that has been the long-standing custom. Maybe that should change now.

I keep learning new things from the WC !
having a Speaker who is not a member is an interesting concept, especially if s/he could come to see him/herself as representing the House rather than the party. Of course I dream.

I understand that immigrants and migrant workers have a strong history of accepting jobs that no American citizens want.

Good point. There doesn't seem to be anything in the Constution prohibiting an illegal immigrant from being SotH. I'll bet there are many Mexicans who would take the job for a fraction of the salary of a Congressman.

Sounds normal for a polical job.

The Democratic field needs to decrease from 5 to 4.
The Republicans need to start over with a new saet of players.

The Republicans need to start again with a couple of reasonable candidates who hold genuine conservative viewpoints. The "hold my breath until I turn blue" crowd of Limbaugh inspired Republican blowhard hacks needs to feel the wrath and the genuine disdain from real conservatives who vote against them because they, too, are fed up the gimmicks-as-governance stance that these small-minds endorse.

I don't think the Constitution rules out the dead for Speaker so why not Jerry Garcia?
