Assuming the rules below how do you continue from responder's rebid after 1c-1red-xfer completion in t-walsh? I'm used to playing standard 2 way checkback but it seems like it needs refinement because a lot more shapes are in the 1M rebid.

5c4d hands are opened 1c
All weak nt are opened 1c
Rebidding a new suit shows an unbalanced hand
Rebidding 1nt over the xfer shows some strong range, 17-19 or whatever.
Completing the xfer is any weak nt without 4 card support, or any hand too weak to reverse.
Rebidding 2c shows 6

Too many completions, not enough 2, IMO.

You should perhaps give examples of the sequences you're having problems with.

I think you'd gain more by weakening the agreement that 2 shows 6 than by adjusting 2 way checkback. In that case, you'll only accept the transfer with balanced 2-3 card support or unbalanced 3 card support. Responder can now safely invite with a 5 card M.

It doesn't feel right to accept with a singleton and 5431. Better to just rebid 2 (or maybe even 1 with 3=1=4=5) imo, or open 1 with both minors (but that complicates the 1-1?-2 auctions ofcourse).

I don't think there's anything wrong with the OP's system -- many people play basically the same way.

I think it works fine to just play normal 2-way checkback (2c puppet to 2d, 2d artificial GF). Usually it's pretty straightforward to sort out opener's stiff major, if that's what you're worried about. Just don't insist on the major with 6 mediocre ones, go through 2d.

There's room to relay out opener's shape if you prefer to do that over 2d, but I have been perfectly happy with natural bidding.

If you also play that after 1c-1d-1h, 1s puppets to 1n, then you have more sequences than you could know what to do with.

Seems like you can do something like this:

2 forces 2 except in the auction 1-1-1-2 when opener has 3415 (bid 2 to show specifically this shape). In all other cases opener has 2+.

After 1-1Red-Accept-2-2-2M, opener's 2NT rebid shows a singleton in partner's suit with min values. Other continuations basically natural.

After 1-1Red-Accept, responder can pass with a weak hand that wants to play in his suit (probably five is enough here, even though occasionally it will be a 5-1). So 2M is free to show a six-card invite. Now opener can pass with a singleton or doubleton (and min) and otherwise do something sensible.

After 1-1Red-Accept-2, the specific bid of 3 shows (13)45 with singleton in partner's suit. Jump to 3M shows three-card support with singleton diamond. Jump to 3OM is a splinter showing 3-card support with singleton other major. Other bids confirm 2-3 in partner's suit and are natural.

I play basically the same method that you suggest using 2-way checkback continuations and it's simple and quite effective. However, I describe it a bit differently:

After a major transfer, opener accepts with:

1) 11-14 HCP, balanced without 4M (but can be offshape) OR
2) 11-16 HCP, shapely with exactly 3M.

With 1345 hands we can rebid either 1M or 2C based on the nature of the hand and strength of the club suit (so 2C doesn't promise 6).

----

After 1C 1D* 1H* 2C*

Opener bids step with any hands they are treating as 'balanced', and breaks the puppet to various shapely hands with 3c support.

After 1C 1D* 1H* 2D*

Opener's only options with a hand in the balanced family are 2M and 2NT. All other bids show the shapely hand with 3c support.

Similarly after 1C 1D* 1H* 1NT, opener obviously passes with the 11-14 balanced and bids something else with 3c support and shapely...

There is enough space after a 2m checkback, so if you have some detailed discussion about the follow-ups it should be ok.
It requires some memory load, though. Relayers are probably ahead on these sequences.
