1C = clubs/11-13 bal/17-19 bal, could have four diamonds but not five
1D = negative (not enough for game opposite 17 bal) or diamonds

How would you continue after this start? I guess more hands could go into the 1D negative at a push...

At what level do you hope your continuations will be? 3? 4?

Polish clubbers rebid 1 Major on any 4, or 3 if not 4, holding a balanced min. The 1N rebid shows the bigger hand. I'd do that.

I'd overcall 3.

Or is that not what you were asking?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I've played the 1D response = neg or (we only really pass the 1 with 0-5 and 4+). It works well enough. (But don't ask about sophisticated sequences, this partner doesn't like to get into too much detail!)
