A hand I played vs. GIB. The bidding may not be perfect, but there you go. I bid 5NT in the hope that GIB might co-operate and bid on (so that I could reach 7NT if it was right).

If East decides to keep spades, then he must stiff his 9H, which I can pin with a ruffing finesse. If West guarded the spades (or had they broken 3-3) then he would have had to keep two hearts (to prevent his king being ruffed down) and would not be able to keep the spades. The very rare, and very pretty 'double trump squeeze'.

I saw Bocchi get one of these right in a Bermuda Bowl or Rosenblum match at about 3AM my time probably 9-10 years ago, although I think Zia was playing with Rosenberg and they could have broken it up by removing the 2nd entry.

I don't remember posting that many squeeze hands! I think I just pointed out that there was a compound squeeze on one hand. I guess probably because most of my bridge education comes from books, and there are probably more books on squeezes then any other types of card play manoeuvre. If people wrote books that were of the form: 'plan out the elopement for each of LHO's possible shapes and then determine the most likely distribution' then I would probably be better at that sort of thing. Still it is gratifying to go from not being able to spot a simple squeeze and not count the hand properly about a year ago, to being able to spot plays like this within 5 seconds of dummy coming down.

I get teased quite a lot by the other juniors about my love for squeezes, lol. Still it pays off every now and then!

In this case you don't know that spade is unilateral because suit is divided 4-2 and justly consider 10 both controlled by opp otherwise at 9th trick you can lead little spade for K, Q to King of heart for a ruffing to realize a simple squeeze (E2) against E on last diamond. This squeeze positions have been analyzed very clearly by Bertrand Romanet in his book "Le squeeze au Bridge".(Lovera)

I wont make this (unless forewarned) -- I would discard the Vienna coupe spade club squeeze as too unlikely and the trump squeeze as so rare it is not worth getting my name in the papers that way. I go down as soon as possible with the heart finesse sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
