You hold some 5=2=3=3 hand, with something like Kxx or KJx of clubs. Would you ever try 2 here (catering to partner's 1453/2452 shapes, and hoping it's as good as anything else otherwise)? Or always 2, or 2nt despite being quite minimum?

Similarly, how about 2 on some 5=3=2=3 or 5=3=1=4 hands?

I would frequently bid a 3 card suit in this auction.

With a 5-3-3-2 hand where one of the 3-baggers is the Club suit with stopper(s), I always bid 2NT.

Otherwise, yes, a 3-card red suit is biddable for us. Partner's free red suit bid instead of that Neg double remains game-force..not a majority treatment, but it might influence our decision making.

I often bid a 3-card suit here.

I would basically always bid a 3 card red suit in this auction. Maybe I might try 2S on KQJTx or something, but I don't remember not bidding 2red with these patterns. With 5(31)4 I would usually pass, but obviously depends on my hand.

If you're 5=3=3=2, should you bid the better 3-card suit, or should you tend to prefer one over the other?

Thanks, I was just trying to be sure I wasn't being nutty trying a 3 cd red suit. Opp bid 3, partner made an agreed bad 3 call (probably wrong even if I guaranteed 4), down a lot. Worse when teammates found 2 the other way, tried a 1nt overcall instead of 2 and partner tried stayman on 4441.

I prefer to bid 2d. The downside is that partner might be 1534 but won't be 1354, but it is a small range that makes a neg x with that shape anyways. The upside is partner is less likely to make an aggressive game try/game bid IMO. And if the auction gets competitive he can usually count on me having 4 hearts when I bid 2h (sometimes he can rule out 5323 or his guess is simply more likely to work).

I am not at all sure what the general consensus is on this though, it's just what I do, interested in more opinions and your thoughts.
