Our university club (mostly informal play/teaching for complete beginners, who have never played in a real duplicate) is trying to organize a small duplicate every month -- around 8 boards. I know how to run a Mitchell with an odd number of tables, but it's the second time I mess up a relay Mitchell when 4 tables show up. I guess I could just run a skip Mitchell with 3 rounds of 3 boards, but if anyone has a better suggestion, I'm interested.

Also, I'm looking for free, simple scoring programs that run on Linux.

Criss Cross(or Double Weave) Mitchell

Round 1__NS__EW_boards__Round 2__NS__EW_boards__Round 3__NS__EW_boards__Round 4__NS__EW_boards

Table 1__1___1____1-2______Table 1__1___2____7-8______Table 1__1___4____5-6______Table 1__1___3____3-4
Table 2__2___2____3-4______Table 2__2___1____5-6______Table 2__2___3____7-8______Table 2__2___4____1-2
Table 3__3___3____5-6______Table 3__3___4____3-4______Table 3__3___2____1-2______Table 3__3___1____7-8
Table 4__4___4____7-8______Table 4__4___3____1-2______Table 4__4___1____3-4______Table 4__4___2____5-6

boards 1-2 and 5-6 keep going lower; boards 3-4 and 7-8 keep going higher; e/w pairs 1 and 3 go higher round 2; e/w pairs 2 and 4 go lower round 2; for round 3, all e/w skip higher/lower (amounts to the same thing), e/w pairs 2 and 4 go higher round 4; e/w pairs 1 and 3 go lower round 4

Not sure you will find this is better than the Relay/Byestand Mitchell, it works well for any multiple of 4 if you understand the underlying movement well.

The double-weave solution is neat, but if you want something really simple (but imperfect) play a skip Mitchell. They'll play all the boards but meet one pair twice. Or what about a 7-board full Howell? They'll meet everyone that way.

Yes, I think I'm going to end up with the skip Mitchell. The goal is not really fairness of the movement, but just to get the players to experience a duplicate game.

Here's how the relay and bye stand works. Even number of tables.
Two rows with an equal number of tables.

      bye stand table set 4

table 1 set 1 table 4 set 3

table 2 set 2 table 3 set 2

       chair for relay boards.

      bye stand table set x

table 1 set 1 table X set x-1

other tables other tables

table x/2 set x/2 table (x/2)+1 set x/2

       chair for relay boards.

Both rows have the same number of tables.
