just 5. partner seems odds on to have 0 aces and there's the 4th spade to worry about.

5 Partner has a bid. He won't bid 6 with one ace, but will surely bid 6 with two.

5. Along the lines of what wank said - even if partner has an ace (even the spade ace!), there is still the issue of the 4th spade.

And, as mason said, 5 does not necessarily end the auction.

4NT and convert 5 to 5, showing a one-suited slam try.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

7, surely partner has A10xx Qxxxx x Qxx or something like.

On real life 5 looks like enough, but Andy is right, if we can invite with 4NT we should. I don't plan on selling to 5 anyway.

5. Even if pard has a fitting ace, slam is FAR from cold.

Would 4NT -> 5D not show a two-suiter with diamonds and spades?

5D sounds right; I'm not punting slams at IMPs.

I know it does not matter what the result is, and I agree with 5 unless I have an agreement like Andy does, but just out of curiosity, was it the result or post discussion or both/neither that made you ask this question?

In the other room they doubled and reached a making slam. I did not think double was right, with one downside that partner might pass with scattered balanced values. I agreed with wank about the chances of partner having an ace and the possible spade loser anyway.
