I'm combining hands posted in two threads to understand GIB's requirements for a direct takeout double, and hoping to find an understandable consistency, as I frequently don't think in "modern" ways on auctions posted here.

I'm hoping that the important factor isn't that GIB must have 2 or fewer of the opened suit in order to double, but it seems that it might be. On the first hand, I'd overcall 2 with my ratty 5-bagger, but would understand if doubling is a more popular choice. On the second, I'd double since I have at least an opening hand and have support for all three of the unbid suits. (Is it the case that GIB would double if we change 4 to 4?) Once North passes, he's never going to be able to convey his actual hand to partner.

I hate robots' play in general, but this time I agree with them in both cases

1. case
- You are short in their suit
- You have a ratty minor suit that you can't bid on first level
- You have nice 3-card support for both major suits
- There were two passes

2. case
A double isn't horrible, but I like pass more. Your hand is very good for defense in any case. It could be also helpful in offense, IF your partner have:
- relevant strength
- very offensive hand, COMPATIBLE with your hand

I deeply believe that pass is better bid in majority of distributions...
