I don't understand - this seems like a trick question.

Obviously I rise ace and claim 10 tricks. If I run the spade to the queen successfully, I still only have 10 tricks.

This problem does not make sense at all. 10 tricks. You have 10 tricks or 9. Take 10.

Well, if the situation were different, I would say RHO seems to have the ♠K.

Why? Because LHO played like a man with ♣AQ, desperately wanting his pard to push a club through. Since he also has ♦A, he can't have ♠K (13 HCP).

Lol hog anything I post u jump on what exactly is your problem with me? Yes I had a mare on this hand and deserve derision but it seems every damn post I make ur out to have a go and I'm getting quite fed up with it. I come on here to learn and improve not to have some nobody stalk me for any mistakes I might make.

I can count only 9 tricks by going up with the ace.
1 spade, 4 hearts, and 4 diamonds.
If RHO has the king, there are still only 9 tricks.

So what happened? Was the field in 1NT+1 for 120?
110 was a poor result?

yeah this obviously. And I say that as someone who hates over moderating and would much rather have almost none.

Eagles don't take it personally, he has been on this forum from the very beginning and has always been bitter and hateful. This includes towards many of the forum regulars, including (perhaps especially) me. If it is bothersome just put him in ignore you won't miss much. Otherwise I recommend just not responding to his posts, anyone who spends this long on a forum only to out everyone down must enjoy it when people get upset with them.

I find these mirages quite interesting from a psychological view, obviously without the SQ eagles (and others) would not have this blind spot. There are lots of situations like that and you see it even at the very highest levels, some unnecessary card clouds your thinking and gets you away from the point.

Not trying to pick on you eagles, this kind of thing happens pretty frequently and it's just interesting to me. When I read the hand I was thinking for quite a while about things (like would he shift from the SK?!) instead of seeing the obvious. Though I blame you because when it's set as a problem it's even easier to fall into that trap :P

Mirages are inevitable because we humans work with pattern recognition. A suit of Axx Qxx triggers our "low to the queen" alarm more rapidly than the "how can I discard the small xx's?" one. Switch it to Axx xxx and only alarm that sounds is the "how can I discard" one :)

the title interests me - not the hand - on club leads most good defenders would hold this hand to 90 if 44 or down 1 if 53. The thought that IMPS is pure bridge is Ok in that you bid all games and slams and just make your contract. But does anyone question that MP is the MUCH harder game? daffydoc
