If you open the BBO application (web app, but quite possibly windows too) and click on one of the BBO news stories that is a bbo forum thread it resets what is considered new content from "View New Content". Personally I like browsing the forums through view new content, and resetting all the threads as if they've been viewed because I view one thread is annoying. This is obviously only a very minor problem (and just means I should remember to not look at bbo news stories).

Are you logged into the forum when you do this? If you're not logged in, so you read the thread anonymously, I don't think it should affect your "new content" when you login later.

Otherwise, I don't know of a way to link to a forum thread that will not cause it to be treated the same as if you'd gone to the forums and read the thread the normal way. The alternative would be to extract all the text of the thread into the BBO News posting, but reproducing all the formatting would be a big problem.
