Opener had

KQ
K87
K74
QJ952

Full auction went

LHO pard RHO we
pass 1 pass 1
1 1NT 2--- 3
4 pass pass 5
5 dbl (end)

I tried a "walk the dog" on these opponents with 3. Didn't work, but LHO's 5611 wasn't enough to prevent 2 down and ~60%. 5 is an easy make.

I am tempted to ask you what does pass over 1 mean in your partnership, perhaps you alert it as something rare like 6-4 minors?

Opps had 10 cards in spades, 9 cards in hearts, were at favourable vulnerability at matchpoints, had almost half the deck in HCP, and could not find a bid on the first round of bidding? I take it they were the cream of the crop in this highly expert field?

My hand is good enough to raise clubs and then bid diamonds a couple of times. If the opponents bid major(s) at a high level I can bid NT at the appropriate level. A splinter does not show the main features of this hand, great club support and good diamonds.

I would start with a splinter: this takes away space and clearly tells some features of my hand immediately. The choice is between and . Imo a splinter is better, because we allow partner to (not) cuebid which can give us some valuable information.
