Actually they don't. xx retains the usual meaning. Yes, the 1NT bid is lost, but 1NT as i remember reading somewhere, is rarely a good spot to play after a x anywa. On this hand I would question whether you have the values for 1NT after a x anyway.
Clearly quite few posters have forgotten about t/f responses in their boots and all replies to this topic anyway.

why is this a question?

East played dead man, he takes the blame.

I would have bid 1NT over the X, to tell my story, but pass is ok, ..., sort of.
The final pass is just ...
You could even argue, that 3S may be an overbid.

If you trust opener to actually have his 3 bid, then East should bid 4.

Trouble is, sometimes people take liberties when their partner passes, so it's not 100% clear-cut.

Really? They take liberties red vs white jumping to the 3-level? On what planet? People often rebid 2 automatically whenever they have 6 cards, that is a small mistake, but I've never seen anyone jump to 3 as a joke or a preempt or whatever you think it is, and definitely not red vs white.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.
