1C 1H /
2N 3S

Assuming you're not playing NMF or checkback over 2N, what's the min number of s you expect from responder here?

If all Responder's rebids are natural and FG, 3 should be precisely 4-4 in the majors. With 4-5 Responder bids 3, relying on Opener to introduce spades if he has 4 of those.

If all responder's rebids are natural and FG, my partner would have 6 Hearts and 5 spades because I would not have four Spades for the 2NT rebid.

So are you saying that 2NT is not a natural bid? Ye Gods and little fishes!

In answer to the op, 4 of course. What is so hard about that that it needs posting about?

So are you saying that 2NT is only a natural bid if you will bypass a 4-card spade suit to bid it?

I do not understand your reply at all.
With 18-19 balanced and a 4234 or 4333 would you not rebid 2NT?

That is correct. Which part of "I would not have 4 Spades for the 2NT rebid" was unclear the first time I said it?

Then, we go to "if" 3-bids by responder are natural. Natural is defined in a new major as 4+. My partner wouldn't have 4, because I won't have four of them. Therefore, 3S would be 5 or more. It now follows that hearts would be 6 or longer.

Don't misunderstand; for us 3S is an unnatural toy, and we just hope the 5-6 major hand never comes up when I rebid 2NT. I was replying to Jallerton's "IF".

I haven't heard this method. What do you rebid on such hands? 1?

Let me join the dots for you: this auction actually came up, and my partner of comparable experience and I disagreed on it. Since there happens to be a forum for just this type of question which both of us read, I foolishly thought that using it might be permissable.

Yes. We find it a reasonable thing to do.

1m-1H
1S-? If responder has a real response (not some piece of cheese fright response), 1S is forcing and life goes on. If opener had an unbalanced monster with spades, she would have JS to 2S.

Even the fright bidders who pass 1S are probably better off than passing 2NT. But, we find the real advantage to be when Opener does rebid 1NT or 2NT. A check-back structure is unencumbered by the possibility of a 4-4 Spade fit --making those follow-ups compact and efficient. In fact, we find no need for 2-way checkback when a 4-4 spade suit's ship has already sailed.

Also, it is consistent with my tagline, below.
