IMPs, strong team tournament. Do you take any action? What would double followed by pulling 4S to 4NT/5C mean in your methods?

Edited to correct hand which was originally 1-3 in the majors.

Opponents have a double fit, but if you bid now and find pard with extras, he'll probably get way too happy.

Just pass and hope pard can do something.

IMO Pass = 10, 4N = 9, 5 = 8.
Whereagles points out that opponents seem to have lots of , which are likely to break badly. Few of your minor tops will cash, however. Hence, If you pass and partner doubles, you might guess to bid 5

OK, the next question is whether partner should take any action. She has Axx x AKQxx Txxx and passed it out. We lost 17 IMPs as you are cold for 6 and 4 is cold the other way.

Tough decision, Paul. The 2ndary fits increased TNT by 2. Presumably, s broke 2-1 and s 4-1.
  • You'd be less inclined to pre-balance now that your hand has become: x x x x T x x A K x x x x
  • Nor can you blame opener for passing with 3 s and moderate values: A x x x A K Q x x T x x x

I think partner should double.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

That was my thinking. With the extra upside that partner has a penalty double of 4H, but double would have been take-out.

Indeed. At our table they played in 5C+1. But I think one of the NV NS should act.

Perhaps South is better positioned. North basically has only 1 sensible bid (5) which does feel like somewhat of an overbid on that flattish 6322.

South has shape and good defensive cards, should pard opt for passing.

Changed to 1-3 majors.

If North finds the 9 lead, do we beat 4 two?

I think you mean 4H, and no, that was cold. Declarer had Qxxx AKTxxxx x x opposite KJxx Qxx Jxxx Qx. With the original wrong hand (mea culpa), a spade lead might indeed beat it two, but that was not the hand.

South might have bid 4N or 5 and North might have doubled (IMO 5 by North is a distortion). IMO, you need partnership agreement to bid successfully, in this aggressive manner. It's only effective if you can avoid going overboard, punishing partner for enterprise e.g. in this kind of context, you should usually forget about slams and settle for game -- often the right decision, anyway -- slams on minimal values, as in this deal, are exceptional, requiring a perfect fit, with no wastage.
