MP, best hand South, Instant, pro GIB 30.

I question East's 3H bid and North's final pass.

It turned out that +100 for 3S undoubled 2 down was worth 82%. But that was just lucky.

South had in fact promised an extra HCP not held, for a combined 23+ HCP for our side. Sure we appeared to have a D fit, but big deal, not a great fit, and North has excellent prospects for 3 trump tricks.

Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

3 is basically explained as a cuebid, not showing hearts but showing a fourth spade and showing a maximum on his previously-announced 0-9 total points. E/W never intended to play there.

that's funny. a cuebid partner has passed already, there is no game likely. just bid lol.

And its conservative to double after bidding your own suit when already passed. I call that crazy aggressive. The first pass is ultra-conservative.

As East is a passed hand I think that I agree with you. Had East not been a passed hand then I would rank "ultra" as an overbid. It would be interesting to know if GIB draws a distinction when defining its direct 2/1 overcalls.

Very strange hand. West certainly has nothing resembling a Double of 2D. Then, when E bid 2S, then 3H over 3D, W did not take the clear-cut preference. Yet, E somehow knew to correct back to Spades. And yes, most bizarrely of all, N didn't double.

I think that is because, over the 3H cue, West does not HAVE a clear-cut preference. Or if he does it is for Clubs, having v minimum Spade holding for what he has promised so far.
West's earlier X is suspect, but the subsequent pass, offering East a choice of black suits, seems right.

I think Ian is reading 3 the same way Steve did, as natural, rather than as a cuebid as in the provided explanation.
