I wanted XX to be penalty oriented, but based on the description I can't tell whether it says anything at all. Shouldn't it mean something? North's hearts are hardly "twice rebiddable".

yes the description indicates YES you opened 1N. Surely this can be narrowed down, maybe it can indicate penalty (I know that's asking a lot lol)

and how is GIB hand twice rebiddable it has the 5H it promised for a transfer.
Sarcasm is a state of mind

Also, while I agree that North (just) has the total point count promised for the 3D bid, and acknowledging that GIB has a phobia about describing bids as forcing or GF and then sticking to it, I thought that North's 3D bid is GF (absent intervention), at least by a non-passed hand, and I would suggest that he is not strong enough. There is no certainty of a fit. The suits are not robust enough to make up for lack of support, and 2 points for a Spade singleton do not improve the hand in 3N.

It is not an easy hand to bid, and there are no guarantees, but I would have preferred 2N over 3D.

Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

"Gentlemen, when the barrage lifts." 9th battalion, King's own Yorkshire light infantry,
2000 years earlier: "morituri te salutant"

"I will be with you, whatever". Blair to Bush, precursor to invasion of Iraq

What did you hold (as South)?

What I actually held is not at all relevant to the conversation, which is why I omitted it. What is relevant is what GIB (North) thinks I have announced, based on his bidding system.
