In the original Stayman 1N-2♣-2?-3♣ was sign off in clubs. So Stayman has never "promised" a 4-card major.

But now ACBL says you have to alert a rebid which may not have a 4-card major. That's fine but you can still use methods which may not have a 4-card major.

"Now ACBL says" - That would be since *at least* 1990 (but I'm pretty certain that the switch was 1990. So for 10 years, I did (we played weak NT with 2-way Stayman and preemptive calls, so 2♣-then-3m was INV, nat, and said *nothing* about majors whatever. 2♣ then 2NT, that did promise 4cM. Just to be annoying)).

Yes, I have a hair-trigger on "they keep changing the Alert rules" (when in fact they don't), why do you ask?
