Opening one of a major and partner bids 2nt. Nothing listed in either profile re Jacoby or anything else other than Standard American system, I take the 2nt to mean 11-12 high card points. Twice lately, partner has insisted it means he holds an opening nt hand. Am I mistaken?

He can't expect you to guess what it means if your only agreement is to play SA which is very vague. I wouldn't assume anything but just make the most natural rebid.

Probably not in any SA variant. In goren it is a gf nt hand and for most others it is a spade raise.

When I learned "SAYC" (in actuality, "Israeli Standard" which isn't that far away), 1 any - 2NT was 10-11 balanced, presumably with no fit.

In Acol for example.

French standard uses

1x-1/2/3NT as respectively 5-10/11-12/13-15 HCP

with 16+ change suit and, if pard's rebid suits you, make a slam try.

1M - 2NT is a natural invite in Acol, SEF and Forum D. In SAYC it is natural and game forcing. In full Forum D+ (and probably 2/1 although that is open to interpretation) it is a GF raise. In an undefined SA variant it could be any of these. It is also not uncommon to modify the meaning by agreement. A simple solution is a. never make the bid undiscussed, and b. if partner makes the bid just reply 3NT if this seems at all reasonable, then check what they actually held afterwards.

Since when? It's Jacoby 2NT in SAYC.

Oops, you are right Barry - that will teach me to post about SAYC without checking the booklet first. I was getting confused with 1m - 2NT. It would seem I fell into the same trap as Alibar's partners!

In SEF, a 2NT response after a 1M opener shows exactly a 3card fit and invites to game. Without intervention 3M shows a 4card fit, usually.

I have that in Lebel's book, but it's for advanced players. Not exactly french "standard".
