If I open 1 and pard bids 1NT, I'll be on a very difficult guess.

If I open 1 I'll be a bit better (can rebid hearts twice), but the hand is too weak on intermediates and it will be difficult to guess the major suit correctly.

Having both majors, I think I can afford to pass for the moment.

People are playing the board too fast, most go down on first attemp.

I was so excited by the thought of passing on the first round and making a grand-slam try on the second that I forgot which hand had preempted.

He probably knows partner's preempts... :P, actually this one comes form a teaching table where I was East and West and bid double dummy, no way I was going to miss the play problem.
