... for coming first in the July Royals and Masters pairs tourney.

And not for the first time (at least in the leaderboard) as I recall.

Except May, in other months the winner has always partner GIB, in May human+GIB was runner-up.

Before commenting on this, I wanted to research a little to see what "BBO Monthly Royals & Masters Tournament" is. Apparently, there is a monthly tournament for players who have earned a ranking of 10 or higher on BBO (1000+ BBO masterpoints).

To evaluate results, I'd be much more interested in averages than in simply noting the first-place pair. For the July tournament, the 16 human+human pairs averaged 47.08% and the 20 human+robot pairs averaged 52.33%. In June, the 17 human+human pairs averaged 49.03% and the 25 human+robot pairs averaged 50.66%. (I stopped tablulating there.) I was hoping that somewhere in the 7 months there would be a robot+robot pair, but there wasn't.

So, GIB scores a little bit better than average in this field. I presume that anyone who plays with a robot these events is GIB-savvy, probably having earned many of their BBO masterpoints playing in robot tournaments.

I expect that most human-human partners who have reached 10K BBO MPs are pretty GIB-savvy.

But whatever, a human-human partnership has a couple of massive advantages over a human-GIB partnership:
1) They can play a different system from GIB, without the possibility of notifying GIB, and
2) They can adopt defensive carding signals.

No amount of GIB-savviness of GIB's human partner should be able to compensate for that.

That the human-GIB partnerships do so well despite that handicap is a glowing testimonial.

One advantage that GIB has is the divergence of its explanations from hand held, due to programming deficiencies. That would benefit a GIB-savvy partner to the detriment of a possibly less GIB-savvy human opponent.
