Double. I would expect partner to pass.

What hand does West have for such a bid? Seems improbable to me.

If you click on the 3NT bid (with the yellow box around it) you'll see the explanation. W has AKQxxxx, presumably nothing more.

Thanks. In that case it looks like 4S doubled will be the final contract, off three, after we double 3NT (as all the others have suggested) and West runs to 4S which we also double. What else?

The problem is that partner can't have anything (RHO was willing to sit for 3NT) so whether we can set 4SX depends on how many of our high cards are cashing. What makes you think it will be off three?

Of course, we can't necessarily set 3NT either (we have exactly four top tricks). Still, I think we'd be a wimp to pass so like everyone else I will double and hope to set 4SX.

We will wish we had passed though when they score up 590 or even 690.

Obviously the 3NT bidder cannot have AKQxxxx of a minor. I would certainly ask the opponents what their agreements for a 3NT opening bid in first seat are before making any call. It is unusual but not unheard of that a major suit is possible.

I had a similar hand yesterday, except I want in the direct seat. RHO opens 3NT (gambling). From looking at my hand, I knew his suit was clubs. I had about 16 "good" points but nothing immediately runnable. I doubled. Then it goes Pass--Pass. RHO rescues himself and bids 4 clubs. I had 4 spades, 5 hearts, 3 diamonds and one club. I bid 4 hearts. All passed. Partner had 3 hts for me, and I happened to make the contract. I told my pard that I had no idea what to do, and just took a leap. He said that he probably would have done the same thing. What I really wanted to do was double 4 clubs for takeout, but I didn't want to take the chance of a misunderstanding.

Opponents are NV, RHO could have very little and was willing to play in 3N undoubled and take the penalty knowing you have game.

I am somewhat reminded of the hand from Penticton where I left my partner in 3, -8 for an average...
