MP, best hand south, instant, pro gib 30

Over 2S I was about to launch straight into slam, along with most of the room. But then I made the mistake of mousing over 4S. I should have smelt a rat, because with 5-5 or better shape it is not possible to have only 25 total points if I have 24+ HCP.

Anyhoo, what is North doing passing 4S, opposite a 24+ point (HCP or total, who cares) hand with 5-5 in Spades and a minor?

It is the explanation that is most at fault, I guess. Opposite a "normal" 4S bid, pass is more reasonable.

Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

Psyche (pron. sahy-kee): The human soul, spirit or mind (derived, personification thereof, beloved of Eros, Greek myth).
Masterminding (pron. mPosted ImagesPosted ImagetPosted Imager-mPosted ImagendPosted Imageing) tr. v. - Any bid made by bridge player with which partner disagrees.

"I will be with you, whatever". Blair to Bush, precursor to invasion of Iraq

If your short suits are 2-1, and you have an honor in each of them, GIB will count 3 for shortness then remove 2 for double-counting honors and shortness. And, if you have 24+HCP, they can't all be in your two long suits. Of course at that point in the auction, North can count 44+HCP around the table, but I guess you're always supposed to believe your partner rather than the opponents
