Simple defensive question - which spade to play here? JEC vs BBF July 5 - Bd 12

4th best leads, altho this one shd be top of sequence.

What is the correct spade play here? (click NEXT in the diagram to see the first two cards)

Partner has most of our defensive values, so I would hope he or she has lead from a long suit. Declarer likely has only 2, so 3=2=4=4 or 3=2=3=5 are possible. I guess, partner could have five spades as well, as opener might be 2=2 in the majors and 5-4 either way in the minors.

Anyway, I am going to try to set up partner's 4th spade. I see nothing wrong with winning this spade and returning one. If I am not winning it, I will play whichever spade is "encouraging". But I don't see a need to encourage, declarer has two spade tricks, so let's get out of partners way.

If I felt like partner was trying to hit my suit, I would discourage in spades. But partner has most our values (as much as 10 as few as 8) so I will try to cooperate with him.
