I see this as about a 3.49999♠ call but wouldn't argue with anyone who sees it a little more aggressively :P

I really doubt that partner will play me for such a good playing hand at favourable, so I am itching to bid 4♠. I would definitely do so in 1st or 3rd, but being in 2nd causes me to pull back in just a tad and opt for the conservative 3♠ call. 7141 is not in the same family as, say, 7231 or 7132.

There is only one big surprise here ---someone else passed. I also considered 1S, but the NBO probably has no sense of humor. Missing the #2 straight flush in my suit and holding 2nd-round control of the other three somehow doesn't feel right for a 3 or 4-bid, and it is the highest suit.

4S. I'm never bidding 2S, and the 7-4 + w/r IMP bumps this to a 4S for me.

3♠ is fine for me, 2♠ or pass is not.

Like aguahombre, I am curious about the merit of 1S here.

If we preempt I prefer 3S, even W/R.


If partner does have values 1S seems by far the most constructive and we have a much better chance of evaluating NT and diamonds.

Heads I bid 3♠, tails I bid 4♠. The coin landed on heads so I voted 3♠ noting my lousy suit, but I won't be happy if the opps get to 4♥but maybe with one of them passed, it won't happen or they can't make it due to a 4-1 split.

This is a 3.5♠ opening, but since this is not legal, I go aggressive with the 7-4 shape and choose 4♠. 3♠ is reasonable though not to my taste. 2♠ is worse than passing.

I've been becoming more conservative of late, 3S. I think the real deciding factor is whether or not we are content defending 4H. I think we have plenty of chances to beat it.
