Assume that one NT shows 6-10 HCP's with either 3-3-4-3 or 3-3-3-4 distribution. I am known to have a 10 card fit in clubs and now a 3 1/2 loser hand. With that in mind 3NT looks a tad conservative so the choices seem to be between some number of clubs (is 4 forcing?), a cue bid or 3 hearts both of which are certainly forcing. Since I am willing to play a minimum of five clubs I will bid 3 hearts and over the expected 4 club response bid 4 spades partner should now recognize a diamond problem and be able to reach a sensible conclusion. I do admit that even 5 clubs may be on a finesse but to paraphrase the Bard "faint heart neer screwed the cook".

4C looks right ot me. Of course this is forcing!

I like 3. I hope it shows strong one suiter (I could've doubled or bid 3NT with 18-19 balanced). If partner bids 3NT now I can probably pass or maybe raise to 4N. If partner doesn't bid 3NT then the slam should should be very good.
If I bid 4C instead I won't be able to stop in NT barring some very good non-standard methods available.

3, if partner bids 3NT then he has a spade stopper and I'm fine right here, if he goes beyond it then we can get to our club contract.

3S, don't really see an alternative.

I wouldn't play 4C as forcing here.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Should partner bid 4 over 3?

Should partner bid 4 over 3?

This is a 1 response by my methods, even seeing that hand I'm not sure where I want to be as 6 is on trumps 1-1 on a diamond lead and 3N needs clubs 1-1, or diamonds 4-4, or the Kx with only 3 diamonds when you make an overtrick. 5 is solid. MPs I prob want to be in 6.

If my 1N shows 4 clubs as it would with me, then if partner has the A, a slam cannot be horrible (it can be 1-1 and a finesse, but if I don't give much away may require a diamond lead if pard has K instead) so I'd probably bid it. Something to be said for 3 and when partner bids 3N, bid 4 kickback and bid the slam opposite one key card.

Reverse good/bad 2NT solves this:

2NT(at least a good 3 bid)-3(values GF)-6
