Matchpoints. You lead the Q, asking for unblock; 2, 3, 4. Now what? If you don't think this is a pure guess, what factors into your decision?

Sorry about the diagram, I should switch it around so the green is in the center, but these were the actual table positions.

Render unto Caesar, IMO.
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Partner has suggested a singleton heart with his play, so declarer has the AJ. I continue hearts, and hope to get in twice in spades to cash the last two hearts for one off.

2 spades + 3 hearts = 2NT making, not one off. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but maybe you thought you were defending 3NT?

Partner has about a 10 count, he's going to win tricks too.

I understand that; the way I read Quartic's reply made me think that he thought five tricks was sufficient. My mistake if that's not what he meant.

Yeah, I must have thought I was defending 3NT. My plan is still the same though, hoping partner has a trick for me too.

I can't imagine doing anything but playing a low spade now.

I'm continuing hearts. Even though I'm blowing a trick it should come back since I'm setting up tricks for us.

A spade could blow a trick and give declarer an entry. It also doesn't serve to set up many tricks.

Partner has 10-11 so its a matter of how much we beat this by.

First of all, opener started with AJ4.

Counting points, partner has somewhere between 9-11 HCP depending on what the 2 NT is (assuming 20-22 HCP).

Any switch you make might finesse partner for opener.

So I'm continuing a with K. Hopefully, partner will catch that signal as show a preference for a return.

Also, there is a slight bonus in that partner can make an informatonal discard on the continuation.

I think this is a really hard problem. I would strongly consider playing a heart. I don't even know how to solve it. A problem with a spade is that we might get forced to break a minor or play a heart later when we don't want to. E.G. we set up the spades, and then are put in. This is on top of the obvious problem with a spade that declarer may have AQ, and now we've blown a trick while not setting up our long suit, have given dummy an entry, and have the same getting endplayed issues later, which is very bad.

A heart is really dangerous too, we are giving declarer the tempo to drive a minor while also giving him a trick for sure. Our entries are also probably slow, which gives declarer even more of a tempo advantage. Ugh.

I do not know how to simulate this or figure it out. I'm just gonna go with I don't like giving up a trick 100 % unless I know it's right/I have fast entries, so I'll play a spade. GAMB00000000L.

I gave this from memory to Joe Grue and Fred last night except I had dummy as 3424 and I forgot about the spade ten. With those completely significant changes they both thought a spade was clear. I don't really know what my point is.

declarer has 15-16 hcp left outside hearts. p has 9-10
this hand rates to hugely difficult for declarer and it seems
wrong to decide to give them a free heart with no guarantee
we will score up 3 extra tricks. I vote for a switch to a low spade
because it requires the least help from p to be successful and
does not contribute a heart trick to declarer on a hand where it
looks like declarer will have nowhere to throw the heart and we
will get it later.

Leading a low spade also lets p know how I want them to
continue when they win a trick and might save us a tempo.

The full hand:

Continuing hearts leads to +50 and a poor matchpoint score, any switch (except a low diamond probably) leads to +100 and a good score.
