A former bridge partner of mine was unwilling to commit to telling opponents whether a signal was encouraging or discouraging. Instead, he described our agreements in the most generic manner possible.

We played odd-even first discards, which he also played with a number of others. Once, when his partner at the time played a 7 as her first discard in a suit, he was asked to explain the significance of the discard. "We play odd-even first discards. If you consider the 7 to be an odd card..."

Not quite as silly as it sounds: I have had a disagreement before now as to whether a knave was odd or even: I thought odd, he thought neither.

"We play count" Normal count? "No, reverse"

This is a growing problem, and I really think it shows really really bad ethics. More and more people playing reverse answer "count" or "attitude".

I think it's quite unusual to use a face card as an odd-even signal, which makes them all odd.

You try finding an odd discard from QJ8642.

Wouldn't it be odd to discard the Q?

The Ace, King, and Jack are all odd. Maybe we could develope a discard system which involves prime numbers and give the Nine a super-special meaning.

Only last month, I overheard (as TD) a pair proudly announce that 2,3,5,7 were encouraging.

"prime" is another term that can be punned in this context. We often refer to high honors that fit well with partner as "prime cards".

Yes, and it is certainly fun to discard them.

The idea that there is any controversy over the parity of a face card is absurd.

J = 11 - therefore odd.
Q = 12 - therefore even.
K = 13 - therefore odd.
A = 14 - therefore even (A does not equal one in bridge).

It is quite unusual to make an odd-even signal with an honor card, but it is not impossible.

If you play prime/composite, then it doesn't matter (-:

Maybe that is my problem. I always try to draw too many trumps, or make an overtrick in a Grand.

What controversy? I was making a pun based on the alternate definition of odd meaning unusual.

It maybe absurd to you, but what does that matter? What matters is that not everyone considers a jack odd.

Absurd is anyone taking any of our last several posts as serious contributions to this thread.
