We had a discussion at the bar (so I don't have a hand for this)

1H-2D
3D-3S (Edit: changed typo 2D to 3D)
3NT-4H

1H=5+cH
2D=4+cD; 10+
3D=4+cD; Does not promise extra's
What is 4H?:
- Proposal to play if opener is min with pnts in C (e.g.: 4351 with slam interest)
- Cue for D

I think it depends on what 3H would have been? For example, if 3H is a cuebid, then this is probably to play (or choice of games, 4H/5D). On the other hand, if 3H is natural suggesting we play H rather than D, for example if 2D doesn't necessarily deny a H fit, then this should be a cuebid.

Suppose you don't know what 3H is and even not that it is forcing :)
(That was what South told me)

Non-forcing slam invitation with a good doubleton heart and extra values, 4252 or 4261. Like a 4NT bid that wants to suggest hearts on the way.

I didn't get support at the bar. Happy I get it her from our star :rolleyes:. I thought that 4 as control for was very unlikely (Why not 4 or 4 then?) and I thought that 4 was passable. ("some" support from you because I didn't think it showed a 2c).

How long have you been at the bar?

What is 3S after the insufficient 2D?

I was thinking 3S -> ostensibly inviting 3NT, but after pulling, 4H sounds like "a cuebid for diamonds, and 3S was a cuebid too even though it didnt sound like it at the time."

I remember a bunch of posts in the past where jdonn played a whole lot of 4M bids as non-forcing slam invitations / encouraging COGs where it wouldn't have occurred to me to do it that way. It makes quite a bit of sense here, but isn't what I'd assume without discussion.

I think a 3 rebid should be natural and 4 is then either Kickback (if played) or a cue bid (if not).

If I had agreed with a 3 rebid, I would think my 4 a game suggestion.

I assume you meant that after the original auction 4 would be defined as you stated.

That is correct. I was answering the two points raised by the OP, that he did not know what a 3 rebid would have been and what 4 should be on the 3rd round. As far as I am aware the auction 1 - 2; 3 - 3; 4 was never raised but yes, I would agree with your interpretation of it, a minimum opener unexcited by the double-fit.
