Scotland has announced all their teams for Lille.The big news is the inclusion of Jun Nakamaru-Pinder in the Open team. Last month he attained the ripe old age of 17. By the time Lille comes round we hope he will have passed the entrance exams for Cambridge.
He has already played in and won the Peggy Bayer( U20 home internationals) and missed out on a place in European Open team after losing a 64 final trial by just 4 imps. In the last 2 Europeans Scotland has fielded 2 other juniors Alex Wilkinson ( who until Jun's full cap will be the youngest ever cap for Scotland) and Frazer Morgan.Despite all of this Scotland still has concerns for the general future of the game as these players are isolated gems rather than the norm. At least aspiring players can see what can be achieved through hard work and we hope others will wish to follow their example

Is the selection of all of these younger players good news (lots of good young players coming through) or bad news (lack of depth and/or enthusiasm within the 'established' players)?

Yes.

Yvonne is playing in the Women's team in Dublin purely on merit. All the established players played in the trials. She has also won the Lady Milne Trophy for the last two years.

Jun and Jim missed out on automatic selection for the Europeans by 4 imps in the play-off and their team-mates were chosen as the third pair. A lot of people were unavailable for Lille, including all the Camrose and European Open team, although this may have much to do with the late announcement of the date and venue.

It is true that Scotland has seen a lot of its established players focusing on the Senior events at EBL and WBF tournaments. But the general feeling is that we've got the best set of young players for some considerable time and it does seem that there will be opportunities for them at international level if they continue to improve.

Of course you will be able to provide an update after you've played some of them on Friday and Saturday.
