The funny thing is that at the tables where the auction was 2♠-(3♥)-3NT-(pass)-4♠, North played for the drop of ♠Q and went down.

GIB doesn't know about saving -- pretty much all the bidding rules are based on bidding contracts to make, the exceptions being standard preempts and LAW bids. So in this case, it knows that it doesn't have enough for a 5-level contract opposite a passed partner, so rather than overbid it takes a chance and chooses to defend. Give West the ♥Q and its decision to pass the double would have worked out.

The real problem is passing the redouble. Simulations are supposed to help in situations like this, but if it can't figure out the hands to deal in the simulations, it's not going to make the right decisions. This is a hard problem to solve.

GIB's convention card says that he plays Responsive Doubles thru 3♠, so I was surprised by the explanation of one over 4♠.
