I open 1 NT and rebid 2 over stayman and complete the transfer if he transfers a suit.

1 NT not only comforts me from rebid problems but also hard on LHO to overcall his major at 1 level. No need to say i have have a balanced hand and perfectly in 1 NT range with hcp.

1NT is fine, but I prefer 1C+2C.

1N

I used to open these 1, but being a purist somehow never seems to work out.

1NT, no question. I'd rather lie about my exact shape than my HCP; also with clubs so much better than diamonds and not strong enough to reverse, you have a rebid problem no matter what partner says over 1C opening. The only time I get into real trouble is when partner is 5-5 in the majors and forces me to choose between them at the 4-level.
Hey 2/1: Whoever said I want to give up the right to play in 1NT?

I'd open 1N but my partner does not open these hands with 2 small doubletons so this may be marginal for him. I'll check.
If I can't open 1N, I'll open 1.

I'd Open 1NT (Playing a 14-16 so I feel less bad about the tight QJ). I'm trying to steal here just as much as get to play 3NT.

Isn't that auction going to start 1NT - 2H; 2S - 3H; and now you can bid 3NT to try and communicate that you have the minors?

1NT and I will rebid 2x+1 for x=(c, d, h).

1C - 1H/1S
2C - 2D! ( now Responder had an inexpensive and easy "cheapest new suit forcing " -- may be artificial; not GF )
3D ( now partner knows I am 4d/5+c, no 3 cards in Responder's major, and can take appropriate action )

It's possible in the 1S response case that you could rebid 2NT after 2D! --- ostensibly showing a stop in ( the other major ).

Both hands & bidding:

Opps can take the first 11 tricks (6 & 5) with best defense.
The defense wasn't best:
Small for RHO K.
RHO had KTx and returned T.
LHO took A and returned another for the 9 in dummy.
..I wondered if opening 1NT was ok.

This is part of the advantage of opening 1N.

As a defender would it occur to you that we have 10 running tricks?

lol, it would occur to me a a defender not to return the ten of hearts when declarer has QJ doubleton and dummy has 9xx.

But yeah obviously open 1N. If the opponent was 6331 rather than 6322 they are cold for game.

Would you have wondered, if you had the spade 3 instead of the diamond 3?

I dont have a big opinion on 1NT vs. 1C, but if I openen 1NT, and I go
down as described my reaction is "next bord".

I wondered because vulnerable this could have been costly.
So should it be done vulnerable at IMPs as well or was the layout unlucky?

It is always costly to go down 3 or 4 in a 3NT when the other table(s) stop in some cozy partscore. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to vary the shapes on opening 1NT based on scoring and vulnerability (other than obvious exceptions like 6-card minors and 13 points). That's cutting it too fine for my taste.

This would be a interesting falsecard if we held Qx, on perhaps another layout where we weren't wide open in spades. I can see RHO intentionally blocking the suit with KTx catering to our QJ dub. LHO, thinking partner held Kx and us holding QJT, might look for a desperation shift if he didn't have an entry.

Of course, it may be technically correct to give us a heart trick with QJ/9xx anyway when LHO has no side entry and we have to knock out RHO's stopper.

I would open 1NT with the South hand, and accept down whatever in 3NT if that happens.
And , while I do bid game opposite 1NT with most 9 counts , with this particular North hand I would invite.

I prefer the modern 1NT here since a very nice auction goes 1NT-3NT letting the opps lead blindly.

If playing with a PD who'd object to 1NT or who'd freak when the opps take the first 5+ tricks vs 3NT on occasion, then I open 1 and rebid 2 with this awesome 5 card suit.

I detest opening 1 and rebidding 2 when 4-5 with this huge difference in suits. My seem good enough to play reasonably opposite a stiff.
